5 Ways On How To Shed Old Beliefs: Learning to Let Go

           Letting go is something I have always been reminded by God constantly to do. I was so focused on the action of change that I did not realize that I was still holding on to hurt. I had to give myself credit for having so much energy while I was still holding on to hurtful things and helping others with theirs. 

    Shedding old beliefs can be difficult, but it is achievable. I had a lot of old beliefs that kept me bounded within. The old beliefs made me believe that I could be only what my mind told me what I could be. 

Proverbs 23:7 KJV, states, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.”

      Our thoughts create our reality, which explains why the enemy is after people’s thoughts. When he attacks and mental health issues occur. He has gotten into our thoughts by poisoning them with a negative illusion. Change is a process, but it starts with our thoughts first and foremost. 

    I use to have the process backwards thinking that if I change my actions then my thoughts would change and character would be built. Nope, I was wrong. The process actually involves you to release your thoughts, then your behavior changes, and your character follows along. 

     I was beginning to believe that hurt in general was meant for me. I had endured so much. I had the concept embedded in me that it was other people’s mistakes that made me so bitter and withdrawn, which gave me permission to hold on.  Holding on to old beliefs was what I felt to be the best protection from the painful experiences that I endured. It gave me permission to continue to remind people what they did to me, and how situations made me feel. 

   Then God pointed me to

Matthew 7:1-5 CIV, “Don’t condemn others, and God won’t condemn you. God will be as hard on you as you are on others! He will treat you exactly as you treat them. You can see the speck in your friend’s eye, but you don’t notice the log in your own eye. How can you say, “My friend, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you don’t see the log in your own eye? You’re nothing but show-offs! First, take the log out of your own eye; then you can see how to take the speck out of your friend’s eye.” This was such a good way to convict me! I was definitely judging others and as if my mistakes were more righteous. 

    When God begins to knock on that door of your pain telling you to let go. It can seem very impossible because we have depended on that pain for protection, attention, or fulfillment.  When God tells us to let go, pain can be so addicting that you began to believe that letting pain go will make you lose your identity.  That’s also a lie because our identity belongs to God. We are enough despite what happened to us by our own mistakes or others.

Here are five ways of shedding old beliefs:

1.Recognize your pain

Began to recognize and acknowledge that the situation(s) or circumstance(s) that you did not want to happen, happened! The situation did not happen to you but for you. You know what? You are still alive, so that means you survived the fathom. Great job!  You are an survivor no longer a victim. Find an outlet to use your pain to promote change in others like you want too. Self-expression is key.

2.Analysis your Thoughts ( Where did they come from?) 

       Since you were able to recognize and accept your pain. Began to figure out why you felt comfortable with those negative thoughts for so long. Where did they come from? Are they your thoughts? Or are they the opinion of others that you became accustomed too? Ask yourself why you felt comfortable operating less than who your truly are for so long?  Do like when others think or feel that way? Ask yourself and begin to journal, so you can see your thoughts on paper for you to make sense of it all.

We all have needs to function in life, whether its our physical, mental, emotional, and verbal need. Figure out what you were lacking when your trauma occurred. Your negative thoughts were built because a need of yours was not met or abused.  Once you recognize what needs were not met from surviving that situation(s). You will began to discover why you decided that holding on was the right thing to do.

3.Pray Your Way Through 

   Philippians 4:67 (CIV) states, “Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.”

I don’t care. I don’t care. Prayer solves a lot of things. It helps you become centered and one with the creator. Once you are centered and connected. God will feel more comfortable to reveal to you what you were too blind to see. God will reveal his amazing grace to you. 

Prayer allows you to become more connected by giving God thanks for allowing you to survive what the enemy meant for evil. You did not survive that car accident or disease for your own sake. Tell your story, so God can receive the Glory.  Soon, You will then began to walk into the abundance of life.

4.Water Your Seed

   Jesus told the crowd a story in,

Mark 4:1-9 (CIV)“ Now listen! A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field. While the farmer was scattering the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds. Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn’t very deep. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have deep roots. Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked out the plants. So they did not produce any grain. But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants grew and produced 30 or 60 or even 100 times as much as was scattered. Then Jesus said, “If you have ears, pay attention.”

   As we know there are many people who have a purpose, but very few will get to it because they are so focused on not letting go. For those that found a way to get through without fully letting go could only produce so much in this world. For those that decided to fall on good ground and grow, they were able to produce all the fruit God intended. 

   Our thoughts is our “seed” because our thoughts produce our reality (fruit). When our minds are free from hurt and sorrow. We will not see much of it in front of us. The more you let go and detach from those terrifying thoughts you will began to produce fruit the way God intended. The word of God is the water that allows our seed to grow. 

5.Watch Your Seed Grow

The seed needs to be watered in order to grow. In order, to change your beliefs they need to be water with the word. The word of God is the water that helps the seed to grow and bear great fruit. So be the few seeds that landed on good ground and began to produce your fruit. 

Romans 8:31-32 NIV states, “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

The time has come now for us to stop wasting time on things and people who no longer serve who we truly are. If God is on your side and cheering us on for deliverance. My friend, that is all the support we need!
